LET'S BRIDGE THE GAP

with Fred Reid

THE PERFORMANCE

Fred Reid, has been much loved for many years by schools all over Australia. Fred comes from the Daingattie tribe of North Western NSW and was separated from his family in the mid 1960’s. His mission is to bring about a better understanding of Aboriginal people and their culture. Fred, with the help of one or more of his children, delivers his message in a fun, positive way. His deep respect and knowledge of culture, along with his gentle, humorous rapport with students, make for a very enriching experience.

THE PERFORMANCE

The performance is tailored to the age group of the audience and participation is greatly encouraged in all programmes. All sessions begin with an acknowledgement and cleansing dance (to attract good energy) and conclude with Question Time.

K-2: Dances of Australia’s unique animals are demonstrated and explained as is the didgeridoo and its many sounds. Fred tells a Dreamtime story and teaches language through games.

3-6: Similar to the above. Fred also talks about traditional dress, explains the designs and symbolism of his body paint and shows examples of ochre. He talks about traditional and contemporary lifestyles in an age appropriate way.

7-12: The programme for High School students is an extension of the above. Fred talks of the history of his people and the traditional way of life and also about the Indigenous people of today and the challenges of adapting to mainstream living. On request, Fred can focus on specific issues e.g. Land Rights, the Stolen Generation, Indigenous health.
